Sharing Our Story

Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church was formed in the summer of 2009.  We are traditional, orthodox Lutherans in our beliefs. The first worship service of Christ the Shepherd was held on September 12, 2010 and there have been weekly worship services ever since.  Since November 2013 the congregation has met for worship on Sunday morning at our storefront location at 289 Main Street in Schoharie, N.Y.   Prior to our current location, worship was held in a meeting room at the former Days Inn and Suites/Holiday Inn Express) in Schoharie.  Our Constitution and Bylaws were adopted at the 1st Annual Meeting on September 11, 2011.

There was a unanimous vote on February 6, 2011 to affiliate with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC), an association of congregations who are free in Christ, accountable to one another and rooted in the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions.

Pastor Colleen Quirion began her call as part-time pastor at Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church on February 1, 2016.  She attended Hartwick Summer Institute of Theology and is currently a seminary student at Beyond the River Academy.  Throughout her life Pastor Colleen has been actively involved in a wide-range of ministry activities including serving as Lay Leader, Worship Leader, Deacon and Christian Educator.  The only paid position at Christ the Shepherd is that of the pastor.

Christ the Shepherd is also blessed with lay leaders and active members, many of whom also received training from the Hartwick Seminary Summer Institute of Theology in Oneonta, NY.  They assist with Sunday worship activities and perform various vital functions within the church.  God has gifted our congregation with many talents in the form of these individuals and they tirelessly carry out the ministries at Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Our style of worship is that of a blended service utilizing contemporary praise music as well as hymns. It is a non-liturgical type of service, in that the service is not chanted, but has many of the same elements as in a traditional Lutheran service. Weekly communion is offered when the pastor is present.

FLOCK (For the Love Of Christ’s Kids) Bible Study and Sunday School are offered following worship on Sunday mornings.  A mid-week Bible study is also offered.  For days and times please see our “Church Calendar” on this web site.  First Communion classes and Confirmation classes are available as the need arises.

Since our move to the Village of Schoharie, we have been blessed to participate in numerous community events sponsored by the Schoharie Promotional Association.  We also partner with other local churches for various ecumenical services and events including the annual summer Schoharie Valley Community Camp.  This has afforded us the opportunity to open our building for use during these activities as well as to work alongside our village neighbors.  Fully committed to Jesus’ command to “love your neighbors as yourself,” Christ the Shepherd desires to not only be a spiritual presence in the community, but also a civic presence working to support and partner with community leaders and organizations to improve the quality of life for those who live in the Village and Town of Schoharie.

In addition to specific community events, Christ the Shepherd has an active role throughout the church year in the community by participation in the Schoharie Community Food Pantry, Food & Gift Baskets for Department of Social Services at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, representation in the Welcome to Schoharie baskets, and attendance at Schoharie Promotional Association Business Meetings.

For several years we have actively supported the "Metro World Child’s “Stocking Project” in New York City.  We have sewn and filled between 200 and 400 Christmas stockings each year which are given out to children in the New York City area.  This project was undertaken to help support the ministry work of one of our church “daughters” who is a full time mission worker with Metro World Child.

Our overall benevolence policy is not to accumulate money to any great degree, but rather give most of our weekly offering away (after expenses and some savings for future needs).  We are blessed to be able to budget for and maintain a combined benevolence giving level of 10% of our offering income. Consequently, we have been able to help many individuals and organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. Many of our prior benevolence recipients are included on our Other Links Page on this web site...

(From Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church’s Constitution, section 2)

We believe, teach, and confess the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe, teach, and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe in him.
  a. Jesus Christ is the Word of God incarnate, through whom everything was made, and through whose life, death, and resurrection God fashions a new creation.
  b. The proclamation of God's message to us as both law and gospel is the Word of God, revealing judgment and mercy in the person and work of Jesus Christ through whom God was pleased to reconcile all things to himself.
  c. The canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God. Inspired by the Holy Spirit speaking through their authors, they record and announce God's revelation centering in Jesus Christ. Through them the Holy Spirit speaks to us to create and sustain Christian faith and fellowship for service in the world.

We believe, teach, and accept the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God and the sole authoritative source We accept the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds as true declarations of the scriptural faith we believe, teach, and confess.

We believe, teach, and accept the Unaltered Augsburg Confession and the Small Catechism as true witnesses to the Word of God, normative for our teaching and practice. We acknowledge that we are one in faith and doctrine with all churches that likewise accept the teachings of the Unaltered Augsburg Confession.

We believe, teach, and confess the other confessional writings in the Book of Concord, namely, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, the Treatise, the Large Catechism, and the Formula of Concord, as further valid expositions of the Holy Scriptures.

We believe, teach, and confess the gospel, recorded in the Holy Scriptures and confessed in the ecumenical creeds and Lutheran confessional writings, as the power of God to create and sustain the priesthood of all believers for God's mission in the world.
